The Suduko Myth Buster

from: Lynn Kenilworth

So you've heard about Sudoku, the premiere puzzle that gives a tremendous brain work out to millions of people around the world. You've seen these puzzles printed out on various puzzle journals and it has even achieved permanent status in local news publications. What's more, it now has its own game show.

Your neighbor is addicted to it. It's a mainstay on computer monitors in your office when the boss is not around. If your dog could play, you can be sure it wouldn't be immune to the addictive powers of Sudoko.

Then why, oh why, have you been staying shy off trying the game out and seeing for yourself what the hype is all about?

Perhaps, like other Sudoku virgins (the very few number that remains), you are a little intimidated by the seemingly random numbers that appear on squares within squares that is the game area of Sudoku. Or perhaps, the fact that is called a puzzle that gives the brain a real work out, gives you the willies thinking that it is an extremely complicated game.

Well put your fears to rest. Short of going to the nearest bookstore and getting yourself a copy of Sudoku for Dummies (that isn't such a bad idea, by the way), just sit back and we'll go through the fundamentals of Sudoku so you can finally come out of your shell, join the world wide craze and play Sudoku.

It's simple, really

It's not a puzzle ala riddle of the Sphinx. You don't really need a wide vocabulary like in a crossword puzzle. You also don't need a vast reservoir of general information to solve the Sudoku puzzle. All you need to start playing is time, patience and common sense.

When numbers are not equal to math

Contrary to unpopular belief, to play Sudoku, you don't need to be a mathematician par excellence. Numbers are used for convenience and not for any particular arithmetic formula. Although it looks similar, Sudoku is not Magic Squares. The numbers on the Sudoko grid can be exchanged with other symbols or even colors. Logic, reasoning and common sense are the only skills needed to play Sudoku.

Choose your level

What's good about the Sudoku puzzle is that it is not a one size fits all game. If you're a beginner (and a shy one at that), stick to easy levels of the puzzle and work your way up once you learn the ropes.

Get cracking

With all the above tips in mind, you're now ready to make your first foray into playing Sudoku. What you need to remember is that the usual Sudoku puzzle consists of a 3x3 grid, which is further subdivided into 9x9 grids. Each puzzle comes with certain givens or numbers that are already on the grid. The object of the game is to fill all the squares with numbers from 1-9 without repeating any number in the same line, using the givens as clues through the process of elimination.

His page on Sudoku strategies will help novices and hard core players crack any Sudoku puzzle with his helpful discussion and links on popular and not so popular techniques which he has researched on and personally uses in his quest to be the Sudoku game master.
